Children and teenagers account for half of A&E visitors for sport-related injuries, according to recent findings reported on by the BBC.

Amongst young males, the sports causing the majority of accidents are football and rugby. Injuries as a result are typically suffered on the upper limbs; including shoulders and arms , and often result in fractures and breaks to these areas.

For young females, the biggest causes of sport-related accidents are trampolining and netball. However, specifically for head injuries, the biggest cause is equine and horse related accidents.

The alarming frequency of these types of accidents amongst children suggests a need for better prevention initiatives, particularly in schools, as this is where children take part in such sports and activities. These accidents at school can happen in the playground or in PE lessons and can often be the result of poor supervision or faulty equipment and environments.

The lack of prevention care taken by schools shows negligence as it is expected by parents and carers for schools to provide a safe space for their children, where their health and safety should not have to be a worry.
