Aldi has been fined £1mililon after a worker had to have two toes surgically removed following a ‘horrific’ incident at one of its Derbyshire stores.
The worker was driving a powered pallet truck when the accident happened.
The injuries the man suffered included fracturing all toes on his left foot, two of which had to be surgically amputated and his foot reconstructed using wires. This resulted in him having to take six months off work as the injuries left him unable to fulfil his duties.
An investigation into the accident found that it had occurred due to inadequate training procedures that are informal and unstructured.
As well as the £1m fine, Aldi were also ordered to pay £70,000 in costs.
