With dog attacks being a constant feature in the news these days, it seems that the increase in attacks is due, at least in part, to the 3.2 million British households who have taken on a pet since the beginning of the Covid Pandemic.
Dogs, by their nature, are social animals, and the lockdown has impacted the way our pets socialise with each other and with people. Experts say this has had a profound effect on their behaviour. They have also picked up on their owner’s anxieties and isolation. Are Dog’s now more protective of their owners and more defensive of their boundaries?
Dog behavioural experts say dogs are capable of biting five times per second, making it virtually impossible to avoid being bitten once a dog has decided to attack.
Since the lockdown, the death toll from attacks has reached 24, with the Northwest seeing the most attacks, 6, since March 2020, Wales 4 attacks and 1 in Scotland. 8 of the victims died after being mauled.
It remains to be seen what effect of the recent ban on the XL Bully will have on this seemingly increasing problem.
