Melissa Postello, 23 was left in agony when she accidently spilt the hot drink she bought at the coffee franchises’ Meadowhall shop in Sheffield.
Miss Postello claimed the cup of tea was almost too hot to handle when it was passed to her. She was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, which turned, causing the whole contents of the cup to fall onto her lap.
Miss Postello has criticised Costa Coffee for having water so hot it could injure someone and said when she complained, staff told her that the water is never hotter than 92C.
Her doctor later told her that to get third-degree burns, the water needed to be at least 130C.
After the accident, Miss Postello was treated at hospital after first sitting in a cold bath to try and ease her pain. She was sent home the same day but was advised that she may need skin grafts to repair the damage.
