Many women get eyelash extensions as part of their beauty regime. However, they can cause injury and pose serious health risks.

Eye infections, allergic reactions and damage to/loss of natural lashes have been reported by affected individuals after having eyelash extensions. Swelling, blistering, burning and severe irritation are common symptoms of an eye infection and/or allergic reaction.

A woman suffered from an allergic reaction which included severe blistering around her eyes as a result of the glue used at a beauty salon in applying eyelash extensions. The 42 year old made a complaint to the salon as they failed to carry out a patch test before the treatment. A patch test involves putting the substance being used on the skin and leaving it for 24 hours, to check for signs of any adverse reaction. The woman told the beautician prior to the treatment that she had never had eyelash extensions before but regardless a patch test should always be offered.

Pre-wedding beauty treatment goes disastrously wrong

Another woman had eyelash extensions applied three months before her wedding. However, she had a horrible experience because when the procedure was finished she could not open her eyes. Her eyelids had stuck together as a result of the glue. When she managed to open her eyes, with the help of the beautician and some tweezers, to her horror, dozens of her natural eyelashes had been pulled out. The woman was in pain and had no choice but to go to A&E as she experienced a burning sensation to her eyes. The doctor informed her that super glue had been used to apply these eyelash extensions.

She considered taking legal action against the salon however later found out that the salon had closed down.
